Wasn't really my idea, but my son has wanted a dog for a long time. After much thought and consideration, I relented and allowed him to have one. He had
been wanting a Samoyed for quite a while before he finally found one available. This is Sammy when he came home - he really should have been put up on the
shelves in the toy shop I think. Sammy has the delightful task of waking us up a night, when he thinks he should have some company.....

Very Cute pup, a few years ago in England we had a samoyed...........we loved him. Only problem can be that they are huge barkers, so if thats the case try
and nip it in the bud pretty quick

Awww how cute! Looks like you've got a new photo subject there Saffy. How have your other family members taken to him?

You mean the cats
Yep.. they haven't done too badly, and he still
sees them as in charge. He's kind of a placid nature, so hasn't tried to dominate them. Thanks for the tip about barking Litalnic, I'll remember
to keep an eye on that.
Son is going away for two weeks, and all his mates are offering to look after the dog.... Found a home already, actually. I wouldn't like him to stay here, as he would be on his own all day ... whine whine whine.. neighbours would not like that I'm sure. Of all the things that I have lost, it's my mind that I miss the most.

Sammy is so cute! I bet he is needs lots of grooming and sheds tons all over the place. Glad your cats are doing well with him around. One day I bet I'll
see a photo of all of them (two cats right?) and Sammy together!

Well, so far there has been very little grooming, and no I don't think he's shedding hair. Maybe when it's spring perhaps, but the cats leave more
fluff around with them both being persian! They sit and groom themselves all the time, hence.....
And yes I do have a photo of the three of them together, but the cats were at the back and I couldn't get them all in focus together. So I have one of the dog sharp, with cats fuzzy in background, and that kind of looks okay, plus have it the other way round with the cats as the sharp focus. Of all the things that I have lost, it's my mind that I miss the most.

Is Sammy a full breed Samoyed or a part Samoyed and something else?

He is full breed, cost $1200 here! He has a fancy pedigree name - that is beyond me

He is beautiful Saffy. Does he have a second coat (undercoat). If he does he will definitely need grooming on a regular basis when his is older. I'm
afraid I don't know very much about this breed but he looks as if he may have an undercoat.
I have searched the net Saffy and I think you had better start on a regular grooming session at least once a week. The dog does have an undercoat and this is the coat which will matt up if he isn't groomed on a regular basis. Believe me, I know.

Thanks Jess, good link. We do have grooming tools - son's job! I struggle with the cats
And he has been getting a few brushings, most unusual seeing the maternal
side coming out of my rugby-league son. Plus there's been a few baths to bring him up clean. He goes out to his work every day and often comes home a bit
grubby from building sites.

Just a small piece of adcvice. Make sure your son grooms your puppy right out from the skin. If he doesn't this is where the coat will matt. Often new
owners of fluffy dogs only brush the surface coat instead of parting the coat and brushing right from the roots.

Oh dear. By all means groom him properly like Jess said. Let me see what I can find at the American Kennel Club for you. Ok, here is what they have to say all
about this breed. http://www.akc.org/breeds/samoyed/ Looks as though Sammy will be a large dog, too. Very beutiful if groomed and fed right! Pass this link on
to your son. Tell us how he does in a couple of months.
Saffy, you and your son may also want to check out the links at the bottom of the page and especial http://www.akc.org/breeds/samoyed/puppy.cfm (puppy links). There are also some neat photos of Sammoyeds too. Good luck with him and since he costs so much and is a full breed dog you may want to check out taking him to dog training for showing in breed shows when he is old enough. Did you know that there is a New Zealand Kennel Club (NZKC). You might wish to check them out at http://www.nzkc.co.nz/ if you and your son haven't already. Andrea78745

Thanks Andrea. Yes, knew about the NZ Kennel Club, they've been around quite a long time. "Little" Sammy is away for a holiday with a family,
while my son is away for 2-3 weeks in Rarotonga (for work, painting, would you believe). Didn't think Sammy would be good here locked in the back for all
day. Just hope the family don't lose him or anything, he's already escaped out once.

Escaped once you say. Poor boy doesn't like being cooped up. Do you have a little doggie door and a fensed yard. He may need lots
of exercise. I forget if he is a working dog or not. I didn't know about the NZKC so was really surprised when I searched for it and sure enough it came
right up. Now I have another link in my Favorites/Dog Stuff in IE7. I am so glad they have one. Being a small country I was not sure if they would have a
national kennel club or not.
No he would do a ton of barking or just jump out a window or something if left alone. Maybe the breed needs to be with others. Not sure. Andrea78745 |

LL the NZ Kennel Council has been around for a very long time. Dogs are sometimes exported from Aust. to NZ and vice versa. Their judges are often contracted
to judge in other countries as well. New Zealand has a population of over 4,000,000 people. It is a small country but it is well populated. New Zealanders
are very much up to date with what is going on in the rest of the world and have had many 'firsts'. It was the first country to give women the vote.
One of the first countries to have Mother and Child Care - namely Keratani. The name Karitane is inextricably linked with pioneering paediatrician and psychiatrist Sir Truby King, founder
of the Plunket Society. Karitane's name is echoed in many New Zealand
child-related services and products: This was founded in 1907.
I am getting away from the original subject here but I thought you might be interested in knowing a little more about the country.

Yes I am, In fact when you have time come to my board and post the above post. I believe my members, few through there are now, would also be interested in the
history of NZ. Afterall that is the "plus" in Cybertravelplus. Thanks for all the info Jess. I especially like the one were you mention that NZ gave
women the right to vote long before the USA did.
Good on them! Andrea78745

I just dropped in a name tag to go onto his collar, with his present phone number. They tell me he got out through a small gap in the fence. Very typical as
Sammy still likes to come in through the cat door - just fits. I doubt when he comes back that he will fit through any more.
Except for the last 5 years, we have always had a dog in the family Andrea. I just don't want one now as I have enough responsibility, and even though Sammy is very lovely, I'd still prefer to be without a dog. But I will quite enjoy him and I think I'll be able to take him out on some big mountain walks soon. That will be good as I'll be more keen to get out, even if it's just with a dog for company when there's nobody else to go with. I saw somebody walking two fully grown Samoyeds today. Flipping heck.... they turn into giant sheep! Of all the things that I have lost, it's my mind that I miss the most.

They do Saffy. They are by no means a small dog. Don't road walk your dog until he is fully grown, about 12 months of age. This is because the hard
surface jolts their bones and can damage them while they are developing. Walking him in a park on the grass is much better. If your son has the time and the
inclination he should also be obedience trained. It teaches them good manners which is very important in a large dog. Large dogs are very strong and you
don't want him to be tugging at the lead all the time when he sees other dogs, or people.
I hope you don't mind all this advice but having bred and shown
and also done obedience with my dogs I have learned that all this is important.
Incidentally Saffy I like your new board. It has a nice feeling about it.

Even though I don't have a pet now (had dogs when I was much younger) I enjoy learning about different breeds and the proper care of them. The dogs I had
were not full breed or anything. Just pets. Interesting info Jess. I love your avatar too!

No, don't mind at all Jess. I agree with all your points. Son wanted to get him into puppy classes, and got the info, but it clashes with his league
practise unfortunately - and he takes that very very seriously. I've still been on his case to get him into some sort of training. But to be honest, he
is hard pressed for time and I don't see where he's going to do it. I hope he can manage somehow. I even wondered about taking him myself, but then
had a very exhausting week and that convinced me I'd never make it out to something else in the evening lol.
For now, it is just discipline that he is having to learn the basics, of boundaries etc. Of all the things that I have lost, it's my mind that I miss the most.

Saffy if you could make more enquiries you may find an obedience club which runs their classes on a Saturday or a Sunday. Most of them here are on the
weekends. I am sure you would enjoy it. I always enjoyed going to obedience with my dogs on a Sunday morning. We were both fresh and able to cope with it
very well. It can be a lot of fun too. My dogs always enjoyed it and couldn't wait to get in the car to go.
