Can you recall when I was planning my trip to Nepal, I made mention of a flight that lands up high within the rugged mountains of Nepal, at a place named Lukla
- onto a very short sloping runway, with a big drop at one end, and a big cliff bank at the other...
Most unfortunate to hear today about the flight into Lukla that crashed and 18 people were killed when the plane burst into flame. I understand that it was coming into land when fog suddenly closed over the area. Only one of the pilot has survived the accident. The others killed with Nepalese crew members, two Australians and the rest were German. All would have been starting out on their Everest region adventure as we did. How tragic.
Here's my pics of the airport runway, then the link to a news item about the crash, and that slope? Fair dinkum! The plane you can see is the type of plane that would have been in the crash. There were about 3-4 airlines, and they all had similar planes.
